Slow Dance

This poem was written by a teenage girl suffering with cancer. I received it today in my email and wanted to share it because it sums up so much of how I am viewing life right now. I am savoring these moments with a newborn... moments I will not experience again until I have grandchildren. And I wake up each day and squeeze every little bit of time in with my older children that I can, because they are growing up and leaving babyhood/childhood behind quicky. Take the time to let these words soak in. And be grateful for every living moment you have:

Have you ever watched kids
On a merry-go-round?
Or listened to the rain
Slapping on the ground?
Ever followed a butterfly's erratic flight? Or gazed at the sun into the fading night?
You better slow down.
Don't dance so fast.
Time is short.
The music won't last.
Do you run through each day
On the fly?
When you ask How are you?
Do you hear the reply?
When the day is done !
Do you lie in your bed
With the next hundred chores
Running through your head?
You'd better slow down
Don't dance so fast.
Time is short.
The music won't last.
Ever told your child,
We'll do it tomorrow?
And in your haste,
Not see his sorrow?
Ever lost touch,
Let a good friendship die
Cause you never had time
To call and say,"Hi"
You'd better slow down.
Don't dance so fast.
Time is short.
The music won't last.
When you run so fast to get somewhere
You miss half the fun of getting there.
When you worry and hurry through your day,
It is like an unopened gift....
Thrown away.
Life is not a race.
Do take it slower
Hear the music
Before the song is over.

My mom sent this to me in my email the other day. I've seen it before, but it is a very good reminder not to be in such a rush in our daily lives that we forget to "stop and smell the roses". Ever notice that that is exactly what kids do? They're in no hurry. We adults could learn a lot of valuable lessons from our kids.

A very good reminder...I'm very good at rushing.

That was a neat poem. I think I needed to hear that. With all the stress that has been going on, I feel like I'm taking it out on my kids. And, I don't want to do that. Thanks for the reminder :)

That's amazing. So many lines just rang so true - too many to quote again. So I'll leave it at that. Thanks for posting it.

It is so short. I am trying to learn to savor their moments.

That is beautiful, and important. I need to slow down sometimes.
